PLUSEN converted a clean-slated Baltimore roof top terrace into a multi-space urban oasis with a coastal vibe. The spaces included a raised dining terrace, bar/conversation terrace, lounge terrace, and an elevated lawn panel.
The use of elevation change with steps and walls was the main design element defining the sense of different rooms for the rooftop terrace. A raised lawn panel established an area which helped to elevate the user for better views to the nearby impressive city skyline, as well as provide a softened, refreshing sense of ‘green’ on a vast hardscaped roof. A series of fibercrete planters helped to frame the terrace and limit the views to the existing concrete walls. A large existing raised planter bed was arranged with bands of bold perennials, shrubs, and a grid of large winter-king hawthorn trees, for seasonal interest and transparent structure. The Rooftop Retreat serves as an entertaining area as well as an expanse of outdoor living space for its many residents.
